Commercial Espresso Machine Buying Guide
A commercial espresso machine should be selected around real service demand, not only the number of group heads or the machine’s appearance. The complete setup must support the busiest trading period while remaining practical to operate, clean and service.
Define the business use
A coffee shop, restaurant, hotel and office can serve similar total volumes but have very different peaks, menus and staffing. Record opening hours, expected coffees per day, busiest service window and the proportion of espresso, Americano and milk-based drinks.
Size for peak service
Daily volume is only a starting point. Estimate drinks required in the busiest 15 to 30 minutes, how many operators will work simultaneously, and whether food service competes for counter space and electrical capacity. Allow sensible growth without buying complexity the operation cannot use.
Group heads and simultaneous work
More groups can allow more extractions at once, but useful capacity depends on operator numbers, steam demand, grinder speed, preparation space and workflow. Read the one-, two- and three-group comparison before deciding.
Steam and hot-water demand
Milk-heavy menus place a substantial load on steaming capacity. Consider jug size, the number of milk drinks ordered together, recovery between drinks and whether separate operators will brew and steam. Tea and Americano demand can also affect hot-water use.
Grinders and coffee workflow
A commercial espresso machine needs a suitably capable grinder. Busy operations may need separate grinders for different coffees or decaffeinated service. Assess grind adjustment, dose control, speed, hopper capacity, retention, cleaning and local support. See the coffee grinder buying guide.
Site preparation
- Confirm the model’s electrical supply and plug or connection requirements.
- Provide suitable water pressure and treatment.
- Plan unrestricted drainage where required.
- Check counter strength, dimensions and ventilation.
- Allow access for filters, cleaning and technicians.
Use the installation guide and have requirements confirmed for the exact model before site work is finalised.
People, cleaning and service
Consider staff skill, training, shift handover and who owns daily cleaning. Establish access to authorised technical support and understand whether the warranty is carry-in or includes another service arrangement. Cleaning and preventive maintenance are operating requirements, not optional extras.
