Coffee Machine Cleaning and Preventive Maintenance Guide

Clean equipment is essential for beverage quality, hygiene and reliable operation. This guide provides a planning framework; the instructions for your exact machine, grinder and cleaning product always take precedence.

Before cleaning any equipment

  • Read the manufacturer’s operating and cleaning instructions.
  • Use only compatible products and the specified dose.
  • Observe electrical, heat and pressure safety precautions.
  • Do not dismantle technical components unless the manual permits it.
  • Keep a cleaning schedule where several people share responsibility.

Bean-to-cup machine care

Complete the machine’s prompted rinse and cleaning programmes at the required time. Empty and wash the drip tray, waste container and approved removable parts. Clean the coffee outlet and surrounding area without forcing tools into internal components. Replace water filters as prescribed.

Milk-system hygiene

Milk residues require immediate and disciplined attention. Rinse and clean tubes, frothers, containers and removable parts using the specified procedure and compatible milk-system cleaner. Refrigeration does not replace cleaning. Never leave milk standing in unapproved conditions.

Traditional espresso-machine care

Wipe and purge steam wands immediately after use without creating a burn risk. Clean group heads, baskets, portafilters, drip trays and work surfaces on the schedule specified by the manufacturer. Backflush only machines designed for it and only with the approved method and detergent.

Grinder care

Keep the hopper, dosing area and exit path free of stale grounds and oils using the manufacturer-approved method. Do not introduce water into electrical or burr areas. Burr access, calibration and replacement may require an authorised technician depending on the grinder.

Water and scale management

Descaling is not interchangeable with routine cleaning and should never be performed merely on a generic timetable. Some machines require a specific procedure or professional service. Manage scale proactively through suitable water treatment and follow the exact descaling guidance for the model.

Preventive maintenance plan

  • Each use or daily: milk-contact parts, steam wand, trays, waste and routine rinsing as applicable.
  • Scheduled by the manufacturer: cleaning cycles, detergent use, filters, seals and other consumables.
  • Periodic inspection: leaks, unusual noise, slow flow, damaged cables, deteriorated hoses and changes in performance.
  • Professional service: technical inspection and internal maintenance at the required interval.

Stop and request technical help when

  • There is an electrical fault, burning smell or damaged cable.
  • Water leaks inside or beneath the machine.
  • Pressure, heating or filling behaviour is abnormal.
  • A fault persists after permitted user checks.
  • The task requires opening protected panels or technical systems.
