Water Filtration Buying Guide for Coffee Equipment

Water is both an ingredient and part of the machine’s operating environment. Unsuitable water can affect flavour, scale formation, sensors and equipment reliability. The correct solution starts with testing the actual supply and checking the machine manufacturer’s requirements.

Why a generic filter is not enough

Different sites can have different hardness, alkalinity, chlorine, sediment and mineral composition. A cartridge selected without test results may address one issue while leaving another unmanaged. “Purified” or very low-mineral water is not automatically suitable either, because some machines rely on conductivity and coffee extraction needs an appropriate mineral balance.

Test before selecting

Use a suitable water test and, where necessary, obtain professional advice. Compare the results with the limits specified for the exact coffee machine. Water conditions can change, so commercial sites should include periodic checks in their maintenance plan.

What treatment may need to address

  • Scale risk: mineral deposits can restrict water paths and affect boilers, valves and heating surfaces.
  • Chlorine, taste and odour: these can alter the finished beverage.
  • Sediment: particles may require pre-filtration.
  • Mineral balance and conductivity: excessively mineralised or overly demineralised water may be unsuitable.

Reservoir-fed machines

Follow the machine manual regarding permitted water and in-tank filters. Do not add products or use treatment methods unless the manufacturer approves them. Replace filters at the prescribed interval and do not assume bottled water removes all scale or operating risks.

Plumbed machines

Plan filtration together with incoming pressure, a shut-off valve, connection sizes and service access. Cartridge capacity must suit the site’s water condition and expected consumption. Bypass settings and system design should be handled according to the filter and machine requirements.

Replacement and monitoring

Install the system where the cartridge can be changed safely. Record the installation date, rated capacity and replacement trigger. Replace according to manufacturer instructions, measured consumption and local water conditions—whichever requires action first.

  • Identify the water source.
  • Test the supply.
  • Check the exact machine requirements.
  • Estimate beverage and rinse-water usage.
  • Select suitable treatment and capacity.
  • Provide pressure control and drainage where required.
  • Set a documented replacement schedule.
